Accept and Prosper (Art School style)

Who knew the first day of a Fashion and Textile Design degree at Art School would involve making a travel adapter out of cardboard and wire? For one, not me. As much as I wanted to get straight into the design process and start working on my own line this week has taught me that this first year at Art School won't involve that at all. This at first frustrated me hugely because I came here to learn exactly that. Why should I spend a week making a huge travel adapter which incorporated the word "stretch"? Why should I draw an object in 2D to then make that 2D drawing into a 3D sculpture? I wondered why I was being taken back to what seemed like simple, primary-school-like projects when I had already designed fashion/textile pieces at Higher and Adv Higher without doing so? Having realised it wasn't going to work like that anymore I began to understand why we're doing these projects which, at first, seemed extremely pointless and a waste of time.

Getting past my frustration I began to see the real reason for doing them. These projects will develop how I go about the creative process; how I see and visualise things and help me understand the difference between these words - something I had never thought about before. To fully understand the design process we must first take a step back to move forward. First lesson of Art School = check.
