I'm lacto free baby

For the past few months/weeks I had been getting increasing bad digestion and tummy aches - often after eating or drinking. I realised that this would always happen after i'd drank milk - and from there I realised I might be lactose intolerant. I already knew that lactose intolerance often develops in young adulthood and i'd learnt before that, as humans, out bodies aren't made to digest other mammals milk other than our mothers milk as an infant. We know not to give pets milk to drink because it is bad for them. We, like them, are mammals so why should we, as humans, be any different? It took me a while to admit that this was probably, definitely a lactose intolerance as I love strawberry milkshake and iced coffee more than my leather fringed jacket and I knew, that as soon as I admitted it, I would have to stop drinking those (as I was used to).

Had I known that soya/almond milk tastes SO GOOD I would have converted a long time ago. Not only do I feel better I don't miss drinking cows milk at all. Today, almost all cafés will sell soy milk coffees. In addition, soy/almond milk keeps in a cupboard (unopened) for months i.e. there will be no more running out of milk or competition for fridge space.

Right, so advice, even if you aren't lactose intolerant (which apparently most people are) go get yo soya milk on.

ALEXANDER WANG X H&M

Alexander Wang X H&M

Favourites from the upcoming Alexander Wang X H&M collection. Knowing the pure stress and panic it will be to get my hands on a piece (I have previous experience with the Isabel Marant pour H&M collection - I've never sweat so much over trying to buy a jacket) the plan is to know exactly what I want before I get online. I'm also meant to be at Art School at 9:00 on November 6th but helloooooooo this is Alexander Wang.

3rd time thrifty

Week three of art school has started both worse and better than the previous two. Firstly, good, because we're not drawing objects on top of objects on top of cubes and secondly, bad, because I think I may be becoming ill. NOBODY gets a two day headache from a few vodka cokes (especially not me) so there is clearly something else wrong with me. Flu.

Last week I had the chance to go round the local vintage shops in Aberdeen (the best two which happen to be a less than 5 minute walk away). There I spotted this STUNNA of a dress which I then HAD to try on and which then HAD to be bought. Does it matter I don't have an occasion to wear it for? No.

Also my uni room is such a mess in this picture. Mum, you'll be happy to know I tidied up this morning.

October Polyvore sesh

October blues

Nike shoes £75
Adidas shoes £19.99
Shrimps Lenny keyring £50

My love for this Shrimps jacket is inconsolable and the tendency and inability to buy it is killing me. I did seriously consider doing so last week (who cares about living off super noodles for 3 months when you could wear this whilst doing so??) only to be heavily discouraged by my flatmates. So no Shrimps coat (for the time being).

Accept and Prosper (Art School style)

Who knew the first day of a Fashion and Textile Design degree at Art School would involve making a travel adapter out of cardboard and wire? For one, not me. As much as I wanted to get straight into the design process and start working on my own line this week has taught me that this first year at Art School won't involve that at all. This at first frustrated me hugely because I came here to learn exactly that. Why should I spend a week making a huge travel adapter which incorporated the word "stretch"? Why should I draw an object in 2D to then make that 2D drawing into a 3D sculpture? I wondered why I was being taken back to what seemed like simple, primary-school-like projects when I had already designed fashion/textile pieces at Higher and Adv Higher without doing so? Having realised it wasn't going to work like that anymore I began to understand why we're doing these projects which, at first, seemed extremely pointless and a waste of time.

Getting past my frustration I began to see the real reason for doing them. These projects will develop how I go about the creative process; how I see and visualise things and help me understand the difference between these words - something I had never thought about before. To fully understand the design process we must first take a step back to move forward. First lesson of Art School = check.

Teenage Kicks

Jacket - H&M; Skirt - ZARA;

Trip to LANDAN. Ever since my first visit to London almost 2 years ago (when I was interning for two weeks at the Primark HO) I fell in love with the city, its atmosphere, the architecture, the shops, everything, even the Underground (lol wut). Cliched as it may be I felt at home in London. As a young, innocent 15 year old spending two weeks without family in London was not scary and not once was I homesick. The huzbuzz of the city intrigued me and ever since I've wanted more.

In this picture you see me sporting my new nike trainers which i've NOT ONCE taken off since I bought them in Amsterdam (slight exaggeration but you get the point). Also apologies for the ridiculously bad quality of this picture. Do you realise how much pressure and stress it involves to take a decent outfit pic in Gatwick Airport toilets without being seen? Virtually impossible - my mother photobombed my second attempt.

Tea with Dali

More pictures from my visit to Rotterdam a few weeks ago. We visited the Boijmans Museum which was lovely. The entire collection was very surrealist and featured work from the likes of Salvadore Dali and Piet Mondrian to the work of v current artists like Paul Noble. Sadly my phone ran out of battery (because I forgot to charge it. Idiot) so I couldn't take a lot of pictures. The Paul Noble exhibition especially would have been lovely to photograph as his work was on such a vast scale and it was put together beautifully as an exhibit. Defs one of my favourites to date.

ROTTERDAM - Hotel New York

Hotel New York is located on the Kop-van-Zuid in Rotterdam, Nederland. Because most of Rotterdam was flattened during the war most buildings are post 1945. HNY is an exception and it is really lovely to see an important historic building in the midst of new development (see the fire station in the first image which is almost ON TOP of HNY).

The croquette you can see in the last image is the Dutch "kroket" (made with beef and other stuff i'd rather not know about). However it is a must to try and also usually the first thing I eat (and smell and see) when I arrive in Nederland.

I'd also like to apologise for the quality of my photos in all previous posts and most future posts; (a) I take them with my iPhone, (b) I can't afford a camera and (c) I'm even more terrible at taking pictures than I am at dancing (which is so bad it actually improves when I'm not sober).

Liebsta Award

Thanks to Mia for the Liebster Award nomination.

1. When did you start your blog?  I started this blog in January 2011 under a different name when I was 13. It changed to Designer Dutch Girl and then I changed it to PIETERNEL BAAK very recently. If you look through my archives you will see there's been an almost two year gap (I've apologised for this already I several occasions in several posts). I also stupidly only claimed my blog through bloglovin recently.

2. What is your favourite fragrance? The exact name has rubbed off but it is by Oilily. All their fragrances smell lovely and my first perfume when I was 8 was by them too.

3. What is your favourite make up brand? I dont swear by one make-up brand in particular but I love Bobbi Brown for foundation and Yves Saint Laurent for Mascara (I get it in brown and it doubles up as eyebrow tint).

4. Your favourite film? An education. I've never cried so much at a film. It's the most beautiful story and features Dominic Cooper. Need I say anymore.

5. Do you prefer Summer or Winter? I live in the north of Scotland where most of the year is Winter with a few summer days inbetween so definitely summer, because I don't get enough of it!

6. Do you prefer pastels or brights for your nails? I prefer leaving my nails bare or with a nude coating (so pastels I guess). I get bored of bright colours quickly.

7. Do you have any piercings? Only one in each ear although I love the idea of have a load of piercings in one ear.

8. What is your favourite high street fashion shop? ZARA 100%

9. If you could sum yourself up in 3 words, what would they be? Honestly no idea.

10. Do you prefer a red, nude or pink lip? Nude definitely. My lips are already quite pink and I always forget to top up colour on my lips.

11. What's your favourite way to remove your makeup? I use a L'Occitane cleansing foam - It removes make-up, cleanses and isn't harsh on my skin.

I'll be nominating Sarah, Saskia, Jasmine, Kelsie, Sacha, Katherine, designdschungel and Michelle (I realise this isn't 11 people but if i spend any longer on this im going to be late for work.)

As follows are your questions:

1. What is your favourite blog? (over 2000 followers)
2. What is your favourite blog? (below 2000 followers)
3. Who/what is your biggest inspiration?
4. Fave instagram at the moment?
5. Fave clothing brand (designer or high street or both)?
6. What is your life motto?
7. Favourite music artist?
8. Most important wardobe staple?
9. Nicest country/city/destination you have visited?

Peek a folio

So you know I thought i'd show you guys a peek of my work. I heard recently that my Advanced Higher Art folio has been selected to be part of an exhibition showcasing "outstanding" art folios. This caught me hugely by surprise because most was finished last minute and I wasn't hugely happy with the outcome because I knew I could have made it much better. But a cranky art teacher and deadlines obvs was a good thing since the sqa obvs (again) liked it.  Although I loved making this folio most design pieces would never be something I would sell because I'm not a big fan of them and I know now I should have designed them differently.

I chose the theme to be tropical birds and in retrospect I should have approached the theme in a completely different way. By choosing four very different species to focus on I gave myself too much freedom and too much inspiration/ideas to design with on this scale. I would, doing it again, restrict it to one kind of fabric or use only black and white colour - ie cutting out an important variable in order to a) make the collection fit together as a whole and b) so I can work much deeper in a more restricted area.

I realise this is a very negative post - but it's hard not to criticise your own work when you know what's amiss with it. Apologies.

Dunga dunga dungarees

I've had these asos dungarees for a while and they've spent most of that time hung up in my cupboard. Hence I thought I would up-cycle them into something I will wear more: a play suit. I'm not sure that I've EVER owned a playsuit/romper which is odd because when online shopping I will always select Playsuits first to look at. This is probably because super picky and poor so I rarely see something worth buying that I can also afford.

JOANNA HALPIN
Premier models

The other thing which prompted me to do this revamp is this picture of Joanna Halpin (Joanna is a megababe model and I predict she is soon going to be even more massively successful than she already is because THAT face, THAT hair, THOSE eyes, THAT everything). She is wearing a playsuit by Faithfull the Brand which sadly isn't available on the website YET. I loved the idea of the beach towel stripe print and colours and then the way the shorts sloped up from the inner thigh; an idea which I decided to transfer onto the playsuit.

Instructions: The pictures are quite self explanatory but I'll explain the way I finished off the shorts. I used the overlocker to tidy the cut edges and then ironed them into a thick hem (4cm or so). I then, by hand, using needle and thread, fastened the hem to create an invisible hem and ta da you are finito! Basically when I'm sewing the over locker is my best friend. Or even more than that. A soul mate. It cuts, sews and finishes and prevents fraying and so much more. It's a real babe.

Who stole the time?

It seriously scares me how fast time goes and how little I manage to do in it. This is because I work basically all the time and I spend all the time when i'm not working doing absolutely nothing. As I heard yesterday from a guy called Tom who was making a house on a boat (on tv) "There's no point saying youre going to do all these things if they are just going to stay in the pub". This is very true and for me these "things" stay on a list in my notes on my iPhone. This prompted me to actually do somthing useful with my time and start working my way through this list. As it was the first two things included aquiring clothes (how convenient). 1st thing: buy the black fringed skirt from Zara before it sells out. 2nd thing: make my version on the aa tennis skirt minus the oh-so-important "American Apparel" "size xs" labels which result in a seriously overpriced skirt you could make for a quarter of the price.

Todays thing are:      (a) Pay the advance fee for my uni accomodation,
                               (b) Take photos of my Adv Higher Art folio for an exibition,
                               (c) Actually write a blog post (check),
                               (d) Write a DIY for the tennis skirt.

PROM / FORMAL / GRADUATION

Dress - made by me  /  Bag - Zara  /  Jewellery - Various

So after years of forcing myself to come up with a witty blogname I decided to change it to something neutral (my name) as I wont get bored of that and it probably describes me better than anything else (eg, "designer dutch girl" which (a) was super cringy; (b) I hated it and (c) just ew). So for the time being (or forever) that is the blogname. The annoying thing is that I have now lost my followers from bloglovin due to having a different blogname which is balls.

Right so my high school graduation has been AND I managed to make my dress in a week, whilst I was working full-time, which I am extremely pleased about. The dress is called peek-a-boob for obvious reasons. Also shout-out to the boob tape which done its job perfectly.

Teenhood

I've now FINALLY completed my art course and exams so I am from this moment on completely free of school. Next on the agenda is the school graduation/prom (so I'm not really completely done with school) which involves a lot of waiting around and sleeping parents followed by an overpriced meal at a tacky hotel. Oh the joys. I've decided to make my own dress for this which I've just started and graduation is a week Thursday so we will see how that turns out considering I am now also in full time work. I'm basically an adult now which is frightening because a) I have achieved nowhere near as much as I could have up to this point in my life; b) I still enjoy playing with Lego and getting piggybacks upstairs to bed; c) I feel about 14 years old and d) apparently your teens are the best years of your life and although I've had a great teenhood so far I still feel I've done nothing over the past 6 years or so. My resolutions for my final two years of teenhood (is that a word???) are a) set up a clothing line; b) travel to India; c) dye my hair lighter and d) have more than 25 people who acknowledge my blog. Wait, I'll set my expectations a bit higher for the latter. Let's say 1000.

P x

Ps I think the reason I'm being so ambitious is due to the crazy amount of work I've been able to do today and a large black coffee I drank at lunch.

Hey look I grew

Classic before and after school picture but hey I think I've grown! The first was taking on my first day of primary school (apologies to my sister for cropping her out) and the other on my last ever day of secondary school. This is also my school uniform which we have to wear everyday - white shirt, prefects tie, black shoes and black bottoms. So it leaves almost no room for being creative with outfits. Yay.

24.4.14

Bye school

So the day has come. My last ever day of secondary/high school. Can I get a WOOP WOOP

It's crazy to think I have been in highschool for six years now purely because I still vividly remember my first week at school as if it were yesterday (how cliché). That's a chapter of my life finished and the next is ready to be opened/explored. At 17 I am still a kid at heart; I like to trampoline and build Lego houses and play wink murder so how am I meant to become this "adult me" I am soon expected to be? My solution; a quote, or several quotes. First a classic; Ferris Bueller

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it"

Second: a typical tumblr post

“Yeah, but the truth is we never really grow up. We just masquerade as adults because that’s what we’re expected to do.”
